First edition of a Courteline classic, illustrated with 41 compositions in the text that immediately established Courteline’s “barracks” aesthetic. This series of fierce and comic tales about the absurdities of fin-de-siècle military life — regulations, petty harassment, small cowardices — made Courteline one of the masters of French satire. Its success led to a stage adaptation in three acts, first performed in Paris at the Théâtre de l’Ambigu-Comique on November 18, 1910.
The text was often reprinted and re-illustrated in the twentieth century, but the 1888 printing remains the first appearance.
