An unexplored play by Feydeau, as director Nathalie Grauwin — who staged it in 2014 — has explained, yet an excellent one. Le Bourgeon premiered at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 1 March 1906.
In the Duchy of Brittany, and despite all his mother’s care, young Maurice is visibly wasting away. Destined for the priesthood, he is now afflicted with neurasthenia. Summoned to his bedside, Doctor Vétillé, a military physician, discovers the reason: “It’s the bud bursting with sap until it bursts open.” We leave it to the reader to interpret. A racy play, in the way only Feydeau could manage.
