Captured on 24 August 1914 at the engagement of Éton (229th Infantry Regiment), Jacques Rivière escaped, was recaptured, and was then interned in German-speaking Switzerland (Engelberg), where he wrote this book between 1917 and 1918, not without scruples and hesitation about the wisdom of publishing a text still “in a wartime mentality.”
During his three years of captivity among the enemy, “I had time,” he says, “to observe him and gather in my mind the principal traits of his character”: the future editor of the NRF (1919–1925) thus attempts to fix, with deliberate violence, polemic and analysis, what he calls the “ethnic portrait” of the German, as perceived by a French prisoner.
