Art bref contains various prose texts, including Huis de la mort salutaire and Madeleine qui veillait; Premières alluvions had appeared as early as 1945, published by Fontaine, resurgences of vanished poems, some of which had appeared, in a different form, in Char’s first collection, Les Cloches sur le cœur.
Char reworked them and finally decided to publish them, in a form closer to what he had intended — some twenty years after their first drafting.
A fine copy inscribed to Louis Broder, who two years later would publish the illustrated edition of Le Rempart de brindilles; he was then at the very beginning of his distinguished career as a publisher.
