A French poet, playwright, graphic artist and critic, Georges Hugnet first drew André Breton’s attention through his numerous studies of the Dada movement. He entered and left the Surrealist group in quick succession (see the superb, detailed account of his expulsion in Pleins et déliés, p. 402), yet his poetry retains distinctive accents that resonate throughout this collection.
On the copy he sent to his friend André Thirion, Hugnet inscribed: “(…) Cette machine à calculer la fatalité du sommeil, cet appareil de fourrure évasée, drapée, d’où jaillit le buste de la foudre…” The copy offered here to his father shares the same spirit.
Wrappers a little soiled, with some foxing to the title and half-title, otherwise a fine copy.
