The story was originally to be titled Le Général, a title later abandoned in favor of Les Braves Gens.
Léon Frapié, awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1904 for La Maternelle, was one of the great observers of working-class life under the Third Republic. His work focuses on clerks, schoolteachers, ordinary people, the humiliated and the modest figures of everyday life.
