Sous le casque blanc

Paris, Albin Michel, (September) 1960.
1 vol. (120 x 190 mm) of 288 p. and [2] f. In wrappers.
Second edition, partly first edition.

Signed presentation inscription: “à Maurice Genevoix l'affectueux souvenir de Roland Dorgelès.”

First published in 1941, the book gathers occasional pieces — chronicles and portraits captured “in the heat of the moment” during the conflict — which the author of Les Croix de bois revisited in 1960 from a retrospective standpoint, questioning the accuracy of his observations and how they had withstood the test of time. The present copy, inscribed to Genevoix, forms a direct link between two major witnesses of the First World War. Dorgelès kept the original 1941 preface but added a second one.

From the library of Maurice Genevoix, at “Les Vernelles” (bookplate).
