In his preface to his play Jacques et son maître, Milan Kundera wrote: “When the heavy irrationality of Russia fell upon my country, I felt an instinctive need to breathe deeply the spirit of the Western Modern Age. And it seemed to me nowhere so densely concentrated as in that feast of intelligence, humor and fantasy that is Jacques le Fataliste.” Choderlos de Laclos and Vivant Denon belong, like Denis Diderot, to the eighteenth-century France so dear to the Czech author; their ghosts are set here against the media-driven society that is Kundera’s target.
