Published in the United States in 1938 under the title The Long Valley, shortly before The Grapes of Wrath, this collection brings together fifteen short stories, including The Chrysanthemums, The Murder and the celebrated The Red Pony. Most were written between 1933 and 1934: their observations of farmers, farmhands, children and outsiders confronting solitude, violence or the discovery of death make these stories a remarkable introduction to Steinbeck’s world.
