Go Down, Moses comprises seven stories forming a short novel spanning more than a century in the history of the McCaslin family. The title refers to the negro spiritual Go Down, Moses, Faulkner thus drawing a parallel between the enslavement of the Jews in Egypt and that endured by African Americans. Fatality, incest and racism — recurring obsessions in Faulkner’s work — are treated here with irony and derision, affirming the unity of nature through an initiation into the wilderness of the forest.
