Two years after Northern Lights, Philip Pullman published The Subtle Knife in 1997, the second volume of what would become the His Dark Materials trilogy. The three novels were later adapted for the stage, radio and screen, and subsequently as the television series His Dark Materials.

The first book had placed Lyra Belacqua in a universe parallel to our own, populated by spectres and daemons and armored bears, and dominated by an authoritarian religious power, reworking John Milton’s Christian poem and borrowing several of its characters, images and conflicts. Pullman himself acknowledged and pointed out numerous borrowings and references to Paradise Lost.

A fine copy.
