One of the first 26 copies on Marais paper, René Char's own copy, justified by him in black ink: “mon exemplaire des Busclats” (no. 10). It contains numerous corrections and variants in the poet's hand.
The final version of Le Marteau sans maître, incorporating the last corrections Char wished to make to his texts.
This edition appeared nearly thirty years after its first publication, a volume of great importance to Char: it gathers the essential works of his Surrealist period (Arsenal, Artine, L’Action de la justice est éteinte, Moulin premier), dedicated to Breton and Éluard, and also marks his continuing loyalty to his friend and first major publisher, José Corti.
Char had already flagged a correction to Corti for the previous edition, in the poem “Voici” from Arsenal. Corti once again overlooked it. The correction was finally made in later printings, including those subsequently issued by Éditions Gallimard.
