When war broke out in the summer of 1914, Loti decided to return to service and requested mobilization. Assigned as a liaison officer to General Gallieni, military governor of Paris, he served as a secret emissary between France and Turkey, allies of the Central Powers. He was cited in 1918 for his military service, continuing his advocacy on behalf of the Ottoman Empire, which was then facing dismemberment by the victorious Western powers. His efforts were in vain: the Ottomans’ alliance with Germany earned them no leniency in the peace treaties signed in 1919. Disillusionment overtook Loti, and he never fully recovered from it.
Fine condition, with the fragile orange wrappers well preserved; spine slightly faded.
