First illustrated edition, with four photographic plates reproduced in photogravure. No deluxe-paper copies were issued. One of the copies stamped as a review copy — the author's own copy.
Originally a strictly historical series, the Flammarion “Hier et Aujourd’hui” collection turned, in the early 1930s, to contemporary texts set during the First World War: works on Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, Napoleon and the Empress of Russia were followed by two titles by Maurice Genevoix — abridged versions of Les Éparges and then of Sous Verdun (retitled Jours de la Marne), each enriched with photographs.
These inexpensive, popular editions, with their photographic covers, proved highly successful with the public.
A rare copy in as-new condition, exactly as issued.
