Le Clézio’s “Mexican dream” asks what this civilization might have become had it survived the European invasion: an essay on the brutal disappearance of the Indian civilizations of Latin America in the sixteenth century, brought about by the Spanish conquistadors. Cortés, la Malinche, Motecuzoma II and Cuauhtémoc are the principal figures in this conquest and in the annihilation of a Mexico examined here by a writer who himself lived there for several years.
