Bradel-style vellum binding with border, the front cover decorated with an openwork plexiglass plate beneath which the embossed title appears on a gold paper sheet, spine with false raised bands, vellum doublures and endleaves, original wrappers and spine preserved (binding signed by Albert de Jaeger, 1950).

Posthumous first edition. Frontispiece with a portrait of the author by Picasso and a photographic portrait. One of the numbered copies on fawn vellum.

First publication of the poems addressed to Louise Coligny-Châtillon, known as Lou, most of which had appeared in the letters the poet sent her between 1914 and 1918. These poems remained unpublished for some thirty years after Apollinaire’s death, and only a few fragments were known, published in the collection Calligrammes. Seventy-six poems were published here for the first time, ahead of their complete edition in 1955 under the title Poèmes à Lou, followed in 1969 by Lettres à Lou.

The copy is enriched with a signed presentation inscription by the binder, Albert de Jaeger. A goldsmith, founder, sculptor and medalist, he won first prize at the École nationale des arts décoratifs in Paris in 1922. He is responsible for numerous large medals cast for the Monnaie de Paris (those of the ENA, the Légion d’honneur, the Ordre national du Mérite) and for an equally large number of busts and portraits. His work as a binder, however, is rare.
