Terre d’amour et de feu brings together three reports written in Palestine, then in Israel, in 1926, 1948 and 1961, bearing witness to the different stages of the creation and development of the State of Israel.
Born to Jewish parents, the great reporter decided in 1964 to gather these writings, reworking them to produce a personal and updated account of the history of Palestine and Israel, from the earliest settlements in the desert to the achievement of statehood, including the war that accompanied its official birth. “Few things are as moving as the sight of a few young women watching with the same love over the sleep or play of dozens of children. Tomorrow, they will go to the fields to do a man’s work. I am not exaggerating, I am not carried away by easy lyricism. What I write, I saw, I witnessed it.”
At the time, he saw only the first outlines of what was to come.
Sixty years later, it must be acknowledged that the promise has not been fulfilled.
