Aux termes de notre traité, il vous revient pour droits d'auteur sur ce nouveau tirage une somme de mille huit cents francs.” The letter is addressed to Anatole France, “de l'Académie Française, 5, villa Saïd, E[n] V[ille].” France was at the time one of the leading authors of the Calmann Lévy house.

First published in 1893 by Calmann Lévy, Les Opinions de M. Jérôme Coignard, recueillies par Jacques Tournebroche was issued in 40 copies on Hollande paper and 20 on Japanese paper. The book’s success was such that the publisher reprinted it several times, as recorded in a letter to the author preserved with this copy.

On this later 1897 printing (bearing the statement 13e édition), France added a witty presentation inscription to the print dealer and bibliophile Victor Prouté, with whom he maintained a long friendship.
