Le Chien jaune
Assigned to the Brigade mobile in Rennes, Commissaire Maigret is called to Concarneau to solve a series of crimes. Watching from behind the windows of a café, he gradually becomes drawn into the secret life of a group of regulars at the establishment…
The actor and playwright Abel Tarride played Commissaire Maigret in the film directed by his son, Jean Tarride. Simenon does not seem to have appreciated his performance: “A few months later, I shrank by twenty centimeters (Maigret has just been speaking of Pierre Renoir’s interpretation) and, what I lost in height, I gained in girth; under the features of Abel Tarride I became obese and good-natured, so flabby that I looked like an inflatable animal about to float up to the ceiling” (Les Mémoires de Maigret, 1951, p. 48).
