Portrait photographique d’Edmond Rostand
S.l.n.d. [Paris, Otto Wegener, circa 1898].
1 albumen print, cabinet format (100 x 145 mm) with autograph signature, mounted on cartoline (115 x 165 mm). On the verso, embossed stamp, “Otto. 3 place de la Madeleine Paris”.
Period cabinet-card portrait by Otto Wegener, on strong card with the blindstamp of the Otto studio, Paris, located place de la Madeleine. Autograph signature in ink by Rostand, on the image, lower right corner.
Two photographs were taken that day: one full-length, and this other in which Rostand is seated on a stool, in profile.
This view was later used as the frontispiece for the edition of La Matinée de Cyrano de Bergerac of 3 March 1898 (Paris, A. Lahure, 1898), reproduced in photogravure by Dujardin after Otto Wegener’s negative. This Swedish-born photographer worked in Paris from 1867 onward and specialized in cabinet-format photographs (145 x 100 mm), much sought after by fashionable society.
