Jean Commère was another lover of the Loire, though downstream: he was born in Angers and would settle at the end of his life in Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then in Paris, he had a long career as an Expressionist painter and illustrator. Jean Giono and Maurice Genevoix were the two authors he illustrated most, producing for the latter the volumes Chasse (1964), La Dernière Harde (1967) and this Raboliot, in 1974: “Commère’s work is deeply engaged, in the highest sense of the word, and the only sense that should concern the artist” (in Les peintres témoins de leur temps, Hachette, 1961).
From the library of Maurice Genevoix, at “Les Vernelles” (bookplate).
