In postwar Paris, the Grande Perche is not merely a nickname: she is a striking figure from the past, a woman whom Superintendent Jules Maigret had arrested seventeen years earlier. Now she returns. She understands that life goes on, but so does the debt. The case that unfolds is simple in appearance — a burglary, a bourgeois dentist, a Dutch wife — but Simenon, still at his American property, Shadow Rock Farm, weaves a far more intricate underlying plot.
The first edition had appeared, with no deluxe issue, in 1951.
