The Company of Men
New York, Simon & Schuster, [March] 1950.
1 vol. (140 x 200 mm) of 248 p. and [1] f. Publisher's boards, illustrated dust jacket.
First edition of the American translation by Joseph Barnes. First printing.
This was Romain Gary’s first title to appear in the United States, where it met with greater success than in France. Like Tulipe, it is a novel of the immediate postwar period, a mood strongly reflected in its narrative climate, marked also by the fascination the United States exerted over a Europe just discovering a new way of life, Hollywood, the dollar and consumer society.
A rare American Gary title, very difficult to find in first printing.
Some losses and defects to the dust jacket.
