It first appeared in serial form in La Revue des Deux Mondes, nos. 6–10, from 15 March to 15 May 1952 (in five installments), under the title Maigret et les gangsters.
Commissaire Maigret first appeared in four popular novels that Simenon published under the pseudonyms Georges Sim or Christian Brulls. These novels are excluded from the official “Maigret” cycle because Simenon himself established — notably in 1975, when he was determined to suppress any work predating 1931 — a distinction between his “illegitimate” output (books published under pseudonyms) and his acknowledged body of work (books published under his own name).
The official cycle comprises 75 novels, 4 short-story collections and 28 short stories published in periodicals; 50 of these novels were issued by Presses de la Cité, whose cover designs went through four distinct styles. Beginning with Maigret voyage (published in December 1957), photographic covers were replaced by drawn covers featuring the pipe and hat.
