Le Mécanicien

Preface by André Breton
Paris, [Les Cinéastes bibliophiles], April 21, 1950.
1 vol. (145 x 195 mm) of 159 p., [1] and 3 f. In wrappers, uncut, in a box (Laurenchet).
First edition. Limited to 100 copies on pur fil du Marais paper. One of 55 nominative copies, this one for André Breton.

Jean Ferry’s tales, studded with imaginary childhood memories, are pervaded by dreamlike images: a train that never stops, a Chinese astrologer whose pastime is calculating the date of his own death… Subjects that so enthused André Breton that he devoted to them a preface of more than sixteen pages, printed in red at the head of the text: “Jean Ferry writes on the cloud’s repose that Hiroshima has left in our consciousness.”

This volume was published in Les Cinéastes bibliophiles, a series issued by Jean-Jacques Pauvert in very limited printings, inaugurated in 1947 with Jean Genet’s Haute surveillance.

From the library of André Breton (sale, 2003, no. 568, and nominative copy), with his stamp.
