Directed by Pierre Brasseur, with sets and costumes by Alexandre Trauner, Kean premiered at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt on 16 November 1953, with Pierre Brasseur himself in the title role: a commission tailored by Sartre, who tightened the plot and sharpened its reflection on the actor’s genius and the truth of performance.
This “Kean-Sartre” went on to major revivals, including the widely publicized 1987 production starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and staged by Robert Hossein.
