A dialogue novel (1951) later adapted for the stage, Requiem pour une nonne continues the story of Temple Drake from Sanctuaire, blending moral inquiry, guilt and grace. Camus tightened the action, emphasized the choruses, and gave Temple and Nancy a contemporary tragic dimension.

In his correspondence, Faulkner praised the adaptation: “the play was essentially Camus’s,” agreeing that future rights be shared with the writer’s widow (letter of 15 February 1962). Faulkner, for his part, regarded Camus as a peer, praising his “questioning soul,” while Camus ranked Sanctuaire among the masterpieces.
