Pierre Michon’s sixth text again captures a fragment of humanity drawn from a potentially ordinary life: that of a humble peasant, a swineherd and acorn-gatherer, who becomes a painter’s apprentice under Claude Lorrain in order to taste the “true life” of the rich and powerful. Twenty years have passed, and to become sensitive to the beauty of the world and to recount it, he looks back with a prince’s retrospective gaze, having returned to the muddy world to become, modestly, “the king of the wood.”
This is the first, limited edition of the text, later reissued by Éditions Verdier in 1995.
