Au rendez-vous allemand

Genève, Paris, Éditions des trois collines, (June 15) 1945.
1 vol. (120 x 180 mm) of 80 p. and [8] p. In wrappers.
Third edition, partly original, and first edition published outside France.

One of 20 copies on vélin du Marais, the first in the limitation (no. 5).

As in the two previous editions, published by Minuit (December 1944 and April 1945), it is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the poet by Picasso, reprising the one used in the April edition.

Inscribed and signed by Éluard to François Rodondi: “à Monsieur François Rodondi, très sympathique hommage, Paul Éluard,” with an added autograph quotation: “Que la bouche remonte vers la vérité / Souffle rare sourire comme une chaîne brisée. Paul.”

These lines are taken from the poem “Novembre 1936” (“On s'habitue à tout | Sauf à ces oiseaux de plomb”), first published in Cours naturel in 1938 and reprinted in Au Rendez-vous allemand.

Bookplate of Jean Léon Steinhauslin.

Over the course of a nearly fifty-year quest, Steinhauslin assembled the only complete collection of Picasso’s illustrated books: the 156 illustrated books by the master, meaning works containing at least one print engraved by the artist himself and whose printing he personally supervised. The catalogue was compiled by Patrick Cramer and formed the basis of a major exhibition at the Fondation Bodmer in 2006.
