This collection of journalistic notes, compiled in 1912, records the observations of André Gide as a juror at the assize court, appalled by the summary and arbitrary manner in which the bourgeoisie judged uneducated, alcoholic wretches who had become murderers or incestuous rapists, in what Lucien Maury described as “a passionate observation and a distressing lucidity regarding the sense of suffering, this view, so exact and so frightening, of the infirmity of our judgments in general and of those of Justice in particular” (La Revue bleue, 1914).
From the library of Raymond Gallimard (bookplate).
Spine very slightly faded.
