The final poem, “Critique de la poésie,” evokes the assassinations of Federico García Lorca, shot by Franco’s forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War, of Saint-Pol-Roux, the “murdered poet” to whom Vercors dedicated Le Silence de la mer, and of Jacques Decour, shot by the Nazis at Fort Mont-Valérien in Suresnes on 30 May 1942.
