Papillon surréaliste
15, rue de Grenelle, Paris 7e, [Bureau de recherches surréalistes, December 1924].
1 leaf (140 x 67 mm), printed in black on the recto, on sand-colored paper.
« Ariane ma sœur ! de quel amour blessée / Vous mourûtes aux bords où vous fûtes laissée ? »
One of the small handbills the Surrealists used as a means of invective or poetry. More concise than tracts, and distinct from them, these papillons were printed in a uniform format on various colored papers and always bear the address of the Bureau de recherches surréalistes. Some, as here with this line by Racine, carried a quotation; others featured a piece of wit of the kind the Surrealists alone could produce.
