Chapeau bas is a collection of short stories, published fifteen years after Vipères au poing. It comprises seven stories written in 1963 by an author of whom Maurice Genevoix had said in 1956: “He will loosen up, I am certain of it. A strong personality, resistant to compromise […]. It may be that the excesses, the violent, provocative, extravagant rather than deliberately hateful tone of Bazin’s first novel, will in some sense boomerang.” (Maurice Genevoix, “Hervé Bazin,” in Livres de France, May–June 1956).
