The Hoggar mountains provide the backdrop for this novel, illustrated with fine photographs by Tairraz, who had accompanied the author since the mid-1930s. It is the first volume in the “Bivouacs sous la lune” cycle, following the expedition of Lieutenant Beaufort, a rugged Savoyard discovering the desert, tasked with capturing a Tuareg who has just killed two children of a hostile tribe during a clash, and then the French army sergeant who had arrested him, before fleeing: ten years after Premier de cordée, a radical change of scenery — and of temperature!
