Extract of four lines from the poem “À Olympio,” placed in chapter XXX of Les Voix intérieures, composed in June 1835: “Laissons gronder en bas cet orage irrité / Qui toujours nous assiège ; / Et gardons au-dessus notre tranquillité, / Comme le mont sa neige. / V. H.”
Poem XXX of Les Voix intérieures, entitled “À Olympio,” is dated 15 October 1835. Its title postdates the manuscript, reinforcing Hugo’s use of this name, which is none other than his own “pseudonym”: the poet himself, who becomes Olympio, who imposes upon the world the voice of one who depicts the injustice he suffers. Four lines that express the aspiration to wisdom and detachment the poet must show in the face of attacks, whether from critics or from life. Along with “La Cloche,” probably the most important poem in the collection.
