A precious dedication copy, bearing the arms of Emmanuel d’Orléans, Duke of Vendôme (1872–1931), to whom the work is dedicated in his capacity as president of the Institut des Fouilles de Provence et des Préalpes.
Alphonse Donnadieu, who had built himself a villa in Pompeian style which he named “Mosella” (a memory of his native Lorraine), was first deputy director of the Institut des Fouilles de Provence, presided over by the Duke of Vendôme, before being appointed curator of the Musée de Fréjus and director of excavations in that city, then director of Celtic, Greek and Gallo-Roman Antiquities for the arrondissement of Fréjus. For a time mayor of Fréjus, it was through his efforts that the town’s museum, formerly almost inaccessible, became one of the finest collections of antiquities in France.
