From childhood, André Gide retained a habit and love of shared reading; as an adolescent, he annotated his cousin Madeleine’s books like a true literary advisor and read aloud to the family circle. In 1903, the critic he had become decided to gather into a volume a number of his columns published in various newspapers and journals. Prétextes, his first collection, was followed in 1911 by Nouveaux prétextes. The originality of these compilations lies in their arrangement, which highlights Gide’s most personal texts.

Two important collections of Gide’s early writings.

They were printed in very limited numbers on deluxe paper: 5 and 19 copies.

Spines slightly faded, otherwise fine copies.
