It contains, for the first time, Life and Death of Émile Ajar appended to the text — published posthumously in 1981 by Éditions Gallimard as Vie et mort d’Émile Ajar. The English edition, published the previous month, did not include this text. Together, the two texts form a coherent whole, allowing the reader to fully grasp the contours of the “Ajar–Gary” affair.
