This important collection was originally published in Switzerland, in March 1942, by Éditions de la Baconnière, then reissued in August 1943 in England by La France libre. This edition precedes the first French edition, issued by Pierre Seghers in December 1945.

One of the summits of Aragon’s poetry: a manifesto for a new classicism, in the form of an amorous and Resistance-inflected canzoniere. It is composed of poems that appeared in periodicals between June 1941 and February 1942 and constitutes a declaration of love to a woman, a country and a language.
The appendix contains important theoretical and technical texts on poetry and versification, as well as a bibliography of the poems’ periodical publication. The collection is preceded by an important preface, dated Nice, 1942.
