Black calf with border, covers overlaid with a slightly raised composition of four irregular slightly domed persimmon wood rectangles, with vermilion red edges, orange buffalo-hide suede doublures and endleaves, chemise and slipcase (binding signed by Nobuko Kiyomiya, 2015).

On the night of 3 to 4 May 1968, René Char suffered a cerebral hemorrhage: “I thought death was coming, but a death in which, filled with an unprecedented understanding, I would still have one more step to take before falling asleep.” That step would become the texts — written, with one exception, between June and August 1968 — that make up Le Chien de cœur, published by G.L.M. a year later.
“Crible” is the first of these texts, promptly illustrated by Char’s friend Pierre André Benoît with a charming composition heightened in gouache.
