Dialogue entre un prêtre et un moribond…

Foreword and notes by Maurice Heine, based on the original manuscript, until then unpublished. A precursor to Gilbert Lély, who would continue his work, Maurice Heine was the first great editor of the “divine marquis,” publishing in succession this Dialogue entre un prêtre et un moribond, Historiette, contes et fabliaux (1927), Les Infortunes de la vertu (1930) and Les 120 journées de Sodome (1931). His erudition and his rigorous, forceful thinking, as attested by his prefaces, led André Breton to remark that, thanks to Heine, “the immense significance of Sade’s work is today beyond question.” Dated 1782, the manuscript of Dialogue entre un prêtre et un moribond… is certainly the earliest known writing by Sade.
