A year after the publication of Le Procès-verbal, J. M. G. Le Clézio published this short novel with Mercure de France, its narrative unfolding over a single night. It begins at twenty-five past three in the morning, when Beaumont, the main character, is woken by a pain that seems to come from his jaw. This physical — and soon psychological — pain grows steadily more intense, leaving him only two possible recourses: a bottle of plum brandy and the telephone. With these, he believes, he might face the metaphysical crisis now looming.
