A wonderful copy inscribed by the author to the singer Renaud, who a few weeks later would release Mistral gagnant, an album paired with a collection of songs and drawings, prefaced by Frédéric Dard. In his preface, Dard wrote that Renaud’s fans “are, and will always be, wildly grateful to him for doing Verlaine’s job with barroom words. They know what a brother, a moped and a girl are. Your talent helps them exist. Under your fairground lights, their suburb becomes almost pretty and their fate less rotten. They recognize themselves in you as in a mirror, Renaud, my son.”
Mistral gagnant, barely out, had already sold more than 700,000 copies and brought its author onto the program Apostrophes: a consecration of Renaud’s talent and work as a writer, before two astonished godfathers, Frédéric Dard, appearing by remote link from his home, and Bernard Pivot, on set. A great television moment and a fine acknowledgment of the literary kinship between Dard and the singer.
