The Voyage Out is Virginia Woolf’s first novel, written in 1912. It was published in England in 1915: a scathing social satire, described by the British writer E. M. Forster as “a strange, tragic, inspired book, whose scene is a South America not found on any map and reached by a ship that would not float on any sea, an imaginary South America, that lies about the region of Xanadu and Atlantis… It is a book that is not afraid.”
This translation is by Armel Guerne, following an earlier translation published four years earlier by Ludmila Savitzky, which was considered too formal and heavy in its phrasing. Guerne’s new translation long remained the standard version, as did others he produced of works by Melville and Stevenson.
