Costumes et Attitudes 1912-13
First printing of this illustration, the most successful and powerful of this artist's work, comprising twenty original etchings, ten of them in color, all full-page plates.
An important binding by Charles Meunier, who had also bound copy no. 1 in the same style.
A precious copy with multiple states (Japan paper, parchment, pure etching, suite) and two unpublished original signed drawings.
It contains the plates in five states, including:
– the state colored à la poupée on Imperial Japan paper;
– the definitive state on parchment, signed in pencil by the artist;
– the pure etching and two intermediate states printed on Imperial Japan paper, making a total of five states of each plate;
– two unpublished original drawings, executed in black and red chalk on the half-title, signed;
– the suite on Imperial Japan paper of the ten in-text engravings.
Meunier made a specialty of these modeled, chiseled and colored leathers.
Provenance: Sotheby’s London (sale, June 27, 1997, no. 15, illustrated).
Copy no. 1 had been bound by Meunier in this same style of decoration.
