The “other” great literary review of the interwar period, Commerce ran for twenty-nine issues over eight years under the guidance of Valéry, Fargue and Larbaud, assisted by Saint-John Perse, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Bernard Groethuysen.

In 1924, the same year that saw the first issue of La Révolution surréaliste, Commerce moved eclectically and without fanfare among the highest summits of contemporary literature, while also reviving forgotten masters. The review is emblematic of the 1920s and of what Maurice Sachs called the “decade of illusion,” proposing and imposing a form of excellence through a sober, discreet, elegant presentation resolutely devoted to literature. Its literary laboratory published, among others, Aragon, Artaud, Breton, Claudel, Drieu, T. S. Eliot, Fargue, Gide, Giono, Max Jacob, Francis Jammes, Jouhandeau, Jouve, Joyce, Larbaud, Leopardi, Malraux, Henri Michaux, Pasternak, Paulhan, Péret, Ponge, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Rilke, Supervielle, Ungaretti, Valéry, Virginia Woolf, etc.
