New York, Harper & Row, [February] 1964.
1 vol. (145 x 210 mm) of 186 p. Publisher's boards and illustrated dust jacket.
First American edition, translated by Richard Howard.

First printing, with the “first printing” statement.

Only one story had previously been translated into English, following serial prepublication: Le Luth (first published under the title “Ainsi s’achève une journée de soleil” in La Table ronde, June 1954), which appeared in English in Harper’s Bazaar (September 1954 issue, translated by Lily Emmet).

Hissing Tales is Romain Gary’s only collection of short stories. The first story to appear from it was published the following month, in March, by Playboy Magazine, under the title Birds in Peru, and was named “best fiction of the year.” The text was later issued in a separate edition some years afterward, this time under the title A Bit of a Dreamer, a Bit of a Fool. Between the two, Gary adapted it for his first film, Les Oiseaux vont mourir au Pérou.
