Anatole France was already seventy-four when he offered, with precision and a confiding tone, in Le Petit Pierre (1918) what he had already touched upon earlier in Le Livre de mon ami (1885) and then in Pierre Nozière (1899). Unlike the two earlier volumes, Le Petit Pierre is far richer in details revealing the author’s character. “France tells us here that his mind was shaped after his father’s — a traditionalist, spiritualist and even Christian mind — but ‘like a cup molded on a lover’s breast’! That is to say, he reproduced in hollow its sweetest curves. A curiously poetic way of saying that he took, in all things, the opposite view of the opinions […] of the man who raised him!”
