“I have no intention of writing ‘memoirs,’ and I do not keep a diary of the events I experience or witness. But I often jot down notes, prompted by emotion or by the wish to record, in their date and context, an impression or a fact to which I attach importance for various reasons that remain subjective. These notes await, in no particular order, an uncertain fate” (Foreword). The chronicles making up this collection were written between 1971 and 1974. Some of the texts are published here for the first time, while others had already appeared in the “bloc-notes” column of L’Unité, the weekly newspaper of the Socialist Party.
The father of the dedicatee commanded the Volunteer Fire Brigade rescue center of Château-Chinon, the town in the Nièvre where François Mitterrand served as mayor from 1959 to 1981.
