“Wandering along the quays, sniffing the celery smell of Les Halles, losing his nights in the bistros of Maubert,” wrote Robert Doisneau in his preface to this book, “Giraud can tell you about a Paris you could never know. But make no mistake, Giraud is not a showman of monsters. What matters, what is truly wonderful about this book, is that characters roughened by the night act out motifs as old as high society itself: love, money, honor.” This first edition, published by Denoël, was shortened by the omission of the chapter “Carrefour Buci,” which would only appear in the definitive edition published by Le Dilettante in 1987.
